Lark eBook Erica Cope

I have read a lot of YA novels that I have liked. But I could only get 1/2 through this one. The heroine is a little to gullible, trusting and naive. Everyone but her is beyond gorgeous. She is typically plain, shy and her favorite past-time is reading classic novels. Yet every guy wants her. Also typically she had no idea about her supernatural origins. But quickly learns she is God's gift to the light world and end to the dark world.

The author is also guilty of a lot of telling and not showing in the story. The heroine trains every day but we never see it. She is having a big confrontation with the bad guy. She blacks out, is saved and we are told later in a few sentences some of what happened.

Lark eBook Erica Cope Reviews

While realizing I am not the target reader for this novel, I have read and enjoyed many YA fantasy books. This was not one of them. Mia aka Lark, spoiler alert, has never known her father. After an unprecedented experience healing an injured boy, she is whisked away leaving only a note to her mother, to go to Faerie Land, where the good faeries live. she meets her father, who abandoned her and her mother, and after a quick excuse of "I had to serve my people", she instantly forgives him. Right. Then she stays in a magical faeries castle where everything is perfect other than a few glares from other faeries, and she is of course, a Princess. And of course, heir to the throne. And the one who will fulfill the Prophecy. Right. And she likes two utterly gorgeous guys, who both want her. One is the good guy one is the slightly edgy maybe evil one. So what does Mia do...she ignores her mother, skips school, "trains"for magic (hint to authorshow, don't tell) stresses over not being able to do magic (in like two days), fantasized over both guys, whines and gets into trouble when she gets her way (didn't see that coming) TWICE. Then suddenly she saves the day against the supremely evil head faerie...Right. I read the entire book hoping it would get better. Her relationship with her mother was like it was through a window. She adored her baby sister but spent all her time in the castle moaning over which of her hundreds of gowns to wear to breakfast and which guy to kiss. Trite and sappy unless you're like eight years old.
Lark takes you on a journey of self discovery. Mia, a normal High School girl, discovers she is the illegitimate daughter of the Light Elf King born to a human mother. After a car accident that should have killed her co-worker, the mysterious Greyson St Clair (who is her "just friends and no more" friend/protector) transports them both to Alfheimr, the home of the Light Elves where she meets her real father and learns of her true self and of the Light and Dark Elves. Trouble ensues and the dashing Jacoby, who at first seems to be a Dark Elf himself, but when he saves Mia she realizes he's not as bad as he seems. Mia, caught between two worlds; Half Elf and Half human, and between two boys, Greyson and Jacoby. She struggles to find the balance and to figure out a way to save her father's kingdom and win the hearts of the Light Elves and show them they she could be worthy of the crown.
This well written, well thought out debut YA novel by Erica Cope sucks you in with a dream Mia has and you can't wait to read more about it and learn who the mysterious voice is behind it all. And why can Greyson be only friends? I love a mystery and Erica keeps you guessing through the whole book as she unravels the world she has so beautifully created. I love all the side comments Mia says in her head, it makes her a real character with real emotions and you can't help but laugh with her the whole way through. Erica creates a supporting cast of characters that only enhance the story.
While I did find this book a little reminiscent of Amanda Hocking's Trylle Trilogy; Lark quickly takes a turn and takes a life of its own you can't help but love. (PS, I loved the Trylle Trilogy so the comparison is a positive one)
All in all, I really loved this book. It was light hearted, fun, and quippy. I'm guessing its part of a trilogy and I'm so looking forward to the next book, but I liked that Lark wrapped up nicely without a major cliffhanger at the end.
Mia is ready for her senior year! She has a job she likes, does well in school, and was even voted cheerleading captain. In addition to all of that, she met Grey. He seems to pay attention to no one else, but her. They even both work at the movie theater together. Despite this, Grey insists that they are good friends. Mia cannot help but wonder, "What if?" She thinks she knows Grey so well, but after an accident that should have resulted in a trip to the hospital, she learns that there is much more to him than meets the eye.

It turns out, that the world is a lot bigger, and dangerous than Mia realized. Her biological father that ran out on her mother before Mia was born, finally comes back into the picture. Turns out he is actually an elf king! As if things couldn't get any crazier, turns out Mia could be part of an ancient prophecy that could result in the dark elves being able to escape the underworld. Wow, no pressure right?

I really enjoyed Lark! The plot of this book is actually very similar to Amanda Hocking's Trylle trilogy. The same kind of stuff happens, but I think that Cope is actually going to take a different route in the rest of the series. Just because they are similar, does not mean that Lark is not worth reading! I loved the Trylle trilogy, and think that Lark is just as good!! Mia is a very relatable character. She describes herself as somewhat of an introvert that loves to read. I mean how can that not be relatable?

A Few Awesome Quotes

"We both know that the movie theater is probably number two on the avid reader's dream job list, number one being the library, of course."

"I'm pretty certain Senior-itis does in fact exist and that the disease is currently running rampant through my veins."

"This Jacoby character, regardless of how dreamy he may appear, is aiding and abetting my captivity. Not exactly the kind of guy you want to bring home to meet mom."
