SPOILER ALERT: In reality, a 3.5. I rounded up because the story was very fast-paced. Never a dull moment.

I did, however, guess what really happened to the victim almost immediately after the body was found and once we are told her face was mutilated and made unrecognizable. Maybe I jumped to the correct conclusion regarding Linda because I've watched the film "Laura" many times, a movie which has the same premise (A woman is shot in the face at Laura's apartment and everyone assumes it's her because the victim is of the same height, shape and coloring).

I was a little disappointed by the end. After finding out what her sister and Russ have just been through, I can't believe Linda would act so bitchy. her over the top reaction seemed out of character to me. And being familiar with driving in such awful weather, as Linda would have been also, I can't believe she and Russ would pick that moment to engage in a heated argument. And would she really have her sister, from Florida and still emotionally fragile after recent events, drive in a horrific snowstorm? I'm thinking Linda would have switched spots on the way back, at the very least. And just why did Linda get even angrier with Russ once HER infidelity came to light? Realistically, I think she would have grown quiet and contrite. Why did Russ apologize at this point? It made no sense. This whole episode felt forced, the argument and accident, to increase Russ' guilt and create a reason to push him and Clare even further apart and for Clare to rejoin the army. I really think Linda's death is unnecessary. Russ was definitely in a mood to work on is marriage and he would have separated from Clare anyway and she'd still have a reason to re-up. The main reason for Linda's ultimate death just seemed to be for the author's convenience. In my opinion, the story would have been better served if she had just been the original victim. This entire scenario pulled the rating down for me.

Spencer-Fleming has created interesting characters. Aside from Clare and Russ, she has drawn many others well: Harlene, the two lawyers, Russ' mom, the other officers at the police station, etc. Some are likable, some not. All have good points countered by weaknesses.

One of the better books in the series.

I have very much enjoyed this series of detective novels featuring a female
Episcopal priest who helps the police department solve the crimes. I think the author does a good job of getting inside the head of the priest and showing that ordination doesn't make saints out of ordinary humans who struggle to live a moral life in spite of the temptations that come along.
The setting is upstate New York which can be very beautiful in the summer but most of the stories seem to take place in winter when the Adirondack area can be dreary, cold and lonely in the winter.
I don't want to give anything away so I won't comment on the ending only to say that I hope this is not the end of the series
This book is one of a series, and, to enjoy them completely, they should be read in sequence. I found all of them to be totally engrossing. To begin with, Julia Spencer-Fleming writes well and creates characters about whom the reader cares! I found the juxtaposition of Clare's two different careers to be fascinating. The one thing I would have liked was to have been told how she experienced her call to be a priest. The last book published is obviously not to be the last in the series because there are simply too many loose ends dangling that need to be resolved. I can't wait for the next installment! If you enjoy a well-written, fast-read mystery about real adults, these books are for you.
I am an avid mystery reader and have been for many, many years. I have read so much of the American mysteries that I have to seek out foreign mysteries that are not mainstream. I was searching and came upon this series. There are 8 of them. I couldn't wait to get to the next and am so sad to have finished the 8th without another waiting in the wings.

The characters are great-a police chief and a returned female veteran who had a calling and became an Episcopal priest. The setting is a small town in NY. The characters and the town are well developed. The mysteries are believable and at times thrilling. It just doesn't get better than this series. Can't wait for the next book.
I looked forward to receiving this book, and was very disappointed when it arrived. The type font is way to small to easily be read. It looks like it's a 6 or 8 point font, rather than 11 or 12. Not only that, the paper it was printed on makes the type bleed into it a little, making it even more difficult to read. I won't be ordering any more Minotaur books.
