The Machine was a great and entertaining read. I wouldn't normally read a book of this genre, however, the cover art drew me in and after reading the synopsis, I couldn't not read it. E.C.Jarvis has a knack for capturing the reader's attention and maintaining it throughout the novel. Her descriptions were concise, helping to build the setting yet allow the reader to use their imagination without over doing it. She did a wonderful job with character development and how each event shaped the characters throughout the novel. I particularly love Cid's character and his relationship with the cat, Imago. Their relationship provides the comic relief in the story and it is enjoyable to read. The author's dialogue really blew me away; it felt incredibly natural, and not once did I feel confused as to which character was speaking within any given moment throughout the novel. Her use of vocabulary was great, and seemed to fit perfectly for this style of genre. I would've loved for the final battle scene to have been extended a little more than it was, but it was still satisfying. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait until the second book of this trilogy to be released. You will not be disappointed.

The Machine is a damn good book. It hooked me in from the very beginning, and didn't let up until I finished. I'm a fan of steampunk do begin with, and the main thing that this book did was make me realize that yes, there is another steampunk series to add to my ever-growing To Read Pile. I mean, seriously, it's getting ridiculous, you guys.

But this isn't the place for that, this is about Jarvis' excellent first installment of the Blood and Destiny series, and it's a damn fine addition to the rolls of steampunk series. Swashbuckling characters, an absolutely despicable villain, a bit of romance, and writing that just breezes past your eyes and makes this a very quick and enjoyable read. What more could you ask from a novel? I really enjoyed reading Larissa's journey from humble shop clerk to newly minted airship captain. She's a great character, and I'm looking forward to reading more about her adventures. I've already got the rest of the series waiting in my kindle.

Like I said, this is a very fast read, and once you're hooked you'll probably get through this pretty damn quickly, since Jarvis is such a good writer and has crafted such a compelling tale. But don't worry, there are 3 more novels in this series, so you don't have to worry about any sort of Martin-esque delay between novels, so you'll be able to find out what else happens to 'Rissa very quickly. And that's a damn good thing.

If you're a fan of steampunk(even with a bit of "steamypunk", like I said, there's a bit of romance, hehe) then read this book and get hooked on the Blood and Destiny series. Put on your goggles and your finest Victorian attire, brew a nice pot of tea, settle in and enjoy.
Larissa Markus, the heroine and protagonist of this extremely satisfying steampunk tale, may have earned a permanent place in my heart. There are so many reasons to love her she's smart and knows how to get smarter, plus she's got the gumption to go for it as well. Throughout the story, she learns what she needs to know from how to work an airship to how to fight. A pretty and smart but lowly shop clerk becomes swept away in an amazing adventure full of everything you love about steampunk.

Jarvis has created a remarkable and thorough alternate reality to our own, and yet you're never drowned in dreamy exposition about it. It all just comes along naturally as the story unfolds, as it should with good writing.
In many ways, behind its steampunk exterior, The Machine is a coming of age story. Larissa Markus starts out as a Cinderella character. She is plucked from oblivion by the Professor, a charming forty-something aristocrat, and the raging hormonal state he inspires is Larissa's only interest. But as she is drawn into his secret world of scientific genius, mercenaries, magic and battles to the death, she discovers that she is brave and resourceful, even dominant. Cinderella becomes more like Joan of Arc, but without the focus on virtue.
She learns to operate the Professor's balloon driven airship, and takes to the skies in search of her suitor..
She emerges as a natural leader, and in her new role she attracts a different sort of lover. Holt is around Larissa's age and he is on his own like she is. He pushes her to meet impossible challenges as a warrior and as a survivor, just as he pushes himself. He has her back in battle, but he does not expect to tie her down in an undemanding domestic role.
Jarvis injects unexpected moments of humor into romance and into intrigue. Two minor characters, the Bill-Murray-like engineer Cid, and Imago the cat, provide constant comic relief as well.
This is a fun story with good guys and bad guys, but none of the characters ever feel like stick figures. Pirates can be good, and scientists and clerics can be evil. In this world where social constraints have broken down, the realities of rape and torture are not glossed over, but mercifully Jarvis fades to black rather than describing atrocities in detail.
Jarvis is an amazing writer. Her prose is lively and fresh, and she never hits a false note.
